Program Outline

The three-week program takes place under the direction of the expert faculty of the Yad Vashem Seminars for Educators from Abroad, International School for Holocaust Studies. The goal of the program at Yad Vashem is to provide professional development activities to teachers of all faiths and ethnicities from all parts of the world, for teaching about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism in the classrooms.

The program offers participants an intensive teacher training session in Jerusalem. The course of study is designed to give teachers and academics a powerful learning experience examining the history of the "Shoah" (Holocaust), while including a wide range of lectures and activities focusing upon a variety of topics in the areas of art, theology, literature, anti-Semitism, and Holocaust denial.

The International Seminars are designed to address the interests and needs of academics, school teachers, members of the clergy, museum personnel, and community leaders. Participants routinely come from a wide variety of countries and it is this diverse population that allows for an educational experience that challenges the participants to look, not only at their own pedagogical and cultural views, but also those of colleagues they meet in Jerusalem.

The Seminars also include experiential components during which the participants travel throughout Israel, interacting with each other and the locales, and enjoying the opportunities for reflection and relaxation.

Participants meet and learn from Holocaust survivors who share their personal testimonies in the Seminars. These survivors talk about not only their wartime experiences, but also the lives they have created in Israel, and their individual outlook on the "Shoah", and their life after liberation.

The courses and the resources at Yad Vashem offer participants a unique academic experience in Holocaust education and provide a variety of pedagogical tools for educational activities such as lesson plans, guidelines for ceremonies commemorating the Holocaust, and multimedia teaching tools.

T.H.E. PROGRAM provides successful candidates with:

  • Return airfare (Montreal - Israel - Montreal)
  • All tuition costs for the 3-week program.
  • Room and board for the period in Israel.
